Bringing a Mid-Century Modern Gem Back to Life

At Jamie House Design, we believe in honoring the architectural integrity of every home while making it functional for modern living. When we had the opportunity to collaborate with P&G Homes on the renovation of a neglected Mid-Century Modern house, we saw immense potential. Our goal was to restore and elevate this home, balancing its original charm with thoughtful updates. While Jamie House Design is now based in Denver, our love for mid-century modern design extends to homeowners in Littleton and beyond.

Reimagining the Floor Plan for Modern Living

Mid-century modern homes are known for their seamless connection between indoors and outdoors, but this home needed significant updates to enhance flow and functionality. We opened up the main living area, added more access points to the courtyard, and created a more symmetrical layout by reconfiguring the steel-framed windows. A large master closet was added, and the laundry room was brought indoors—small yet impactful changes that cater to contemporary lifestyles.

Exterior Transformation: A Fresh Approach to Classic Design

The home’s exterior underwent a major transformation. While we typically advocate for preserving original brick, in this case, painting was necessary to unify new brick additions with the existing structure. The front door—a true mid-century treasure—was restored and painted a striking turquoise, paying homage to the home’s original character.

Landscaping was completely refreshed by Tim Turner, incorporating modern concrete pavers and native plantings. We maintained the integrity of the site by preserving the existing trees, and new globe lights from Hip Haven in Austin completed the exterior’s updated mid-century appeal.

A Cohesive and Functional Living Space

The living and dining areas originally felt disjointed due to an awkward HVAC chase and inconsistent flooring. We removed these barriers, introduced cork flooring throughout, and restructured the window placements to create symmetry. The updated space allows for multiple furniture configurations, making it adaptable for homeowners. Furnishings and artwork, generously provided by Lynne Goode Vintage, brought warmth and authenticity to the staging.

Streamlined and Stylish Hallway

The hallway, previously an underutilized space, now serves as a functional passageway with added closets and a utility room. The interior brick was selectively painted where necessary to create a seamless transition between materials. We also introduced dark green doors—a nod to the home’s original color palette.

A Hall Bath Designed for Everyday Luxury

Previously oversized and inefficient, the hall bath was divided into a vanity area and a wet room featuring a floating double-sink vanity. Subtle green marble and vintage-inspired globe pendant lighting pay tribute to the home’s mid-century roots. All cabinetry was custom-designed by Jamie House Design and expertly built on-site by P&G Homes’ skilled millworkers.

A Kitchen That Honors the Era While Elevating Functionality

The kitchen was completely reimagined, featuring custom walnut cabinetry, a gray limestone countertop with directional veining, and a sleek glass mosaic backsplash. The updated layout includes hidden conveniences like pull-out pantry cabinets and built-in mail nooks. To improve access, we added a new exterior door, allowing homeowners to bring in groceries without walking through the living area.

The area off the back of the kitchen previously was a small office area. We added a door to the outside, so a person doesn't have to walk thru the living room with groceries. The cabinets feature mail nooks, a small desk and large pull-out pantry cabinets not shown in the shot.

A Master Suite Designed for Modern Living

The primary bedroom saw the most significant layout changes. By converting a former office into a spacious walk-in closet, we created a more luxurious and functional master suite. The primary bathroom, once completely impractical, was rebuilt from the ground up. A large Calcutta marble shower, polished nickel fixtures, and a bright, airy design transform this space into a private retreat.

Master Bath After

Nothing in the master bath could remain. The entrance to the master bath from the bedroom is actually where the toilet is in the before image. The ceiling height remains. I attempted to pick lighting, mirrors, plumbing etc that reminiscences to Mid-Century Modern at least. When selling a bathroom to home buyers it must be bright and clean. The floor is a small white brick mosaic and the large shower is Calcutta marble tiles.

The chandelier in the closet is reused from the previous dining area. It had to be rewired and restored but it was worth it, it's a stunner.

After

This is the powder room off of the closet. I kept everything white and open using the wall color to add some punch. The mini brick mosaic on the floor is the same as the master bath.

Restoring the Studio: A Bonus Space with Endless Potential

One of the most unique features of this property is the detached studio, which also serves as a carport. Severely damaged by Hurricane Ike, it required extensive engineering and structural reinforcement. We reconfigured the stairs for better access and added a covered entry to provide shelter from Houston’s frequent storms.

After

Inside, the studio was completely overhauled. What was once an unlivable space with rotting paneling and moldy carpet is now a fully functional guest suite, complete with a kitchenette and full bath. We retained the original loft ladder and embraced a happy accident—primer soaking into the ceiling’s wood grain, creating a unique finish we decided to keep.

A Proud Achievement in Preservation and Design

This project was more than a renovation—it was a restoration of a mid-century modern home’s soul. The transformation was so striking that it was featured in the Houston Chronicle and earned a nomination in the HGTV Fresh Faces of Design contest.

JHD Mid-Century Event Tonight.

I design a lot of homes with P&G Homes. Over a year ago they had me walk the house to get my opinion. It was bad. So bad. I got flea bites bad. But it was also so good. The potential was overwhelming. We got to work updating the floorplan to be more livable for today's lifestyle. P&G worked out removing a MAJOR beam in the large open/family room because we knew the house would be PERFECT without it. Engineers worked and stressed to get the back studio garage structurally sound again. The selections were all made considering the era of the home, budget and also the era we live in today. This house is very special.

I couldn't bear the thought of it being filled with typical staging furniture (and I don't know any stager with Mid-Century furniture options). I approached Lynn Goode Vintage to see if they'd be willing to stage the home with some of their amazing Mid-Century furniture pieces. I was delighted when they said yes (they even hung amazing art you guys)! This evening Jamie House Design along with P&G Homes and Lynn Goode Vintage are opening this Mid-Century gem to you. Please join us and share the invite with like minded folks.

I will be absolutely delighted to see you there! (I'll share pics eventually for you all that can't make it.)

Recently, I had the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone and speak at the Texas Home & Garden Show. Public speaking has always been a challenge for me, but the experience was invaluable. My presentations covered finding your unique design style, integrating current trends into your home, and practical design tips—including the art of styling with trays. It was a fantastic experience meeting industry professionals and visitors, and I truly enjoyed engaging with attendees and answering their design questions.

It has now been six months since I dedicated myself fully to Jamie House Design, and I couldn’t be more excited about the direction we are headed. I am incredibly grateful for the trust and support of my clients—your confidence in my work fuels my passion every day. This journey has been both exhilarating and demanding, but I have never felt more fulfilled.

To enhance the quality of our services, I have been refining processes to deliver the best designs as efficiently as possible. As part of this evolution, I have made the decision to discontinue our E-Design and Design in a Box services for the time being. While these offerings were valuable, my focus remains on providing highly personalized, in-person design services for homes and businesses. Face-to-face collaboration allows for a deeper connection and more tailored solutions, and I truly enjoy working with each client to bring their vision to life.

Thank you to my incredible clients and vendors—you are truly the best! I look forward to continuing to create beautiful, functional spaces together.
