Decluttering Before a Redesign: The First Step to a Fresh Start

Over the past few months, I’ve been on a mission to declutter—both in my personal space and for my clients. Almost obsessively! The process of letting go has been eye-opening, making me question why I held onto certain things in the first place. The truth is, before any renovation or redecoration, clearing out the old is essential to making space for the new. A well-edited home not only feels more intentional but also allows your design vision to come to life without the weight of unnecessary clutter.

Creating Space for the Home You Want

Living in a charming 1920s bungalow has made me especially aware of how every square inch matters. After spending countless hours in my studio, I found myself wanting to clear everything out and start fresh. For years, I held onto a stunning Ikat fabric for my living room draperies—only to realize that I no longer wanted a bold pattern. Instead, I’m opting for timeless, simple linen with brass hardware, paired with built-in storage that maximizes function and beauty. This shift in my design choices became clear only after I let go of what no longer served my space.

The Art of Letting Go

Decluttering is an emotional process, but it’s also a necessary step in creating a home that truly reflects your present style and needs. Holding onto things “just in case” prevents new and better things from entering your life. When working with clients, I use a few key questions to help guide the process:

  • Do you use it regularly? If it’s not something you use daily, weekly, monthly, or at least annually for entertaining, it’s likely time to donate it. Many of us keep items for a “someday” event that never happens, only to repurchase similar things years later.

  • Do you love it? If you wouldn’t miss it in the event of a total loss, it may not be worth keeping. If it neither serves a function nor brings joy, it’s time to let it go.

  • Is it truly sentimental? Keepsakes are important, but not everything needs to be saved. Instead of holding onto every piece of childhood artwork or baby clothing, select a few meaningful pieces and release the rest.

Decluttering happens in phases—sometimes it takes three rounds to pare down a space to only the things you truly love and use. Give yourself grace and time to process what stays and what goes. Once you've decluttered, commit to only bringing in items that align with your vision for your home.
