Nostalgia and the Power of Original Art in Interior Design
There’s something truly special about discovering a piece of art that speaks to you on a deeper level—one that stirs emotions, sparks memories, and connects you to a specific time and place. Original art has the power to transform interiors, infusing them with personality and soul. Recently, I was reminded of this while reminiscing over a unique series of photographs that took me right back to my high school years in Texas.
The Beauty of Personal Connection in Art
A few weeks ago, I rewatched The Perks of Being a Wallflower, a film that resonated deeply with me. It perfectly captures the highs and lows of high school—those moments of feeling unseen, the desire to belong, and the beauty of finding your people. That sense of nostalgia stayed with me, bringing up memories of growing up in Texas, including a tradition I’ll never forget: homecoming mums.
If you’re from Texas, you already know. These oversized, ribbon-covered corsages are a beloved high school tradition—proudly worn, exchanged between friends and sweethearts, and later tacked to bedroom walls like trophies. If you’re unfamiliar, just imagine the most extravagant floral arrangement you’ve ever seen, but wearable.
Capturing Tradition Through Art
Artist Nancy Newberry brilliantly captures the cultural significance of homecoming mums in her photographic series, Mum. She describes them as "artificial, shiny, and virtually unknown outside of Texas"—a fascinating blend of folk art and youthful tradition. Her work explores the contrast between teenage self-expression and societal rituals, set against the backdrop of Texas suburban homes.
Her photographs instantly transported me back to my own high school experience. I remember moving to Katy, Texas, and being completely baffled by the spectacle of homecoming mums. The sheer size, the jingling charms, the layers of ribbons—it was overwhelming and oddly hilarious to me at the time. Seeing Newberry’s work brought back that same rush of emotion, reminding me how art has the ability to connect us to our past and our personal stories.
“Shot slowly and inspired by an interpretation of my memories, I have limited the settings of the photographs to in and around the subject’s homes. In this very personal space, I pair spontaneous and carefully arranged moments to construct chaos; my interest is in the struggle between self and culture, the real and the perceived. With the extravagance of adornment and insignia the work continues to explore ceremony and commonplace.”
Why Original Art Belongs in Your Home
This is why original art matters in interiors. It’s not just about filling empty walls—it’s about surrounding yourself with pieces that evoke emotion, tell a story, and reflect who you are. Whether it’s a photograph that captures a cherished memory, an abstract painting that energizes a space, or a sculpture that sparks conversation, art has the ability to make a house feel like home.
At Jamie House Design, we believe every home should include original artwork that speaks to its inhabitants.
